Christmas Eve

Snow Cleveland, OH.jpg

It's 28 degrees in Cleveland with a high chance of a white Christmas! It's snowing buckets right now!!! So exciting for this Savannah girl! We had a white Christmas once in my whole life, it was the Christmas of 1989. My brother and I were quite young at the time, and visiting our grandparents in their hometown of Claxton, Georgia, also known as the Fruitcake Capitol of the World (so stated on its water tank as you enter the town). The phone rang the morning of our second day there, with our parents saying we should come home early because it might snow.  SNOW! That's all you had to say to elicit the Disney-World-response in my brother and I. [The Disney-World-response is that giddy hyper uncontrollable excitement children sometimes get that causes them to run around in circles or start yelling for no apparent reason, or laughing hysterically at nothing, all out of sheer excitement of the impending visit to Disney World, or in this case, the possibility of snow.]

We used to make up the grandest ideas of what fun we would have if our neighborhood ever turned into a winter wonderland - we knew we would definitely ice skate on our back-yard lagoon, we'd ride all the beach floats as sleds, we'd use the water skis to ski down the hill up the road (being below sea-leve, the hill wouldn't rank as a hill anywhere else in the world, but relative to the rest of our neighborhood it was a part of the street where you could get a little acceleration on rollerskates). We would never stop coming up with ideas on ways to play in snow.

Our grandparents packed us up and we drove the eternal 50 minutes back to Savannah, shrieking every time we saw anything at all white on the side of the road. That evening the snow started falling, who knows how our parents got us to sleep, and by the next day Savannah was white! We were in winter paradise! Everything in the garage became a toy for the snow. Our pets went nuts. Our neighbor made a sled out of wood and pulled us behind the car. Never had I dreamed of having so much fun. And on top of all of this, it was Christmas Eve the next day.

Merry Christmas Eve! May this excitement live in us always!

I had the pleasure of meeting these young ladies at the show in Pittsburgh, PA. It was fun to share with them about being a musician and a music therapist, as I remembered exactly what I felt like when I was a Girl Scout at their age! The Girl Scouts is an amazing organization providing adventure and leadership opportunities for young women.
