New York City
There's something about reconnecting with a place where you've lived before. Nine years spent spinning in the rapids of this raging city and there's a part of me still here that I reclaim every time I come back. It waits for me right in the center of the bridge, where the best view is, and as soon as my taxi reaches the top it wraps around my skin like a cashmere undershirt. My favorite entrance is the 59th Street Queensboro Bridge, with the long line of the island laid out on a bedrock platter across the entire horizon. And you cannot imagine what happens to my energy when it hits me in that split second.
This time New York was happy to see me, with mild weather, everything flowed in an almost unbelievable smooth way. Sidewalks thick with people opened spaces right in front of my footsteps allowing me to walk like it was a city summer holiday; synchronicities of meeting old friends and running into new ones kept me thrilled; work was super productive and everything flowed as if it was on a conveyor belt, and all in perfect timing. Plus I had the ultimate pleasure of running into one of my favorite artists and received his brilliance in a make-up consultation (you will hear more on him).
A yellow leaf, still hanging onto a few last threads of green, dropped into the window of the taxi this afternoon as we were driving. In that moment I felt reminded of how I always have access to that connection I experimented with last week. And I understood something. The answers are in the moment-to-moment check-ins, the urges and nudges and hunches, that constant reconnection to the divine. I have learned that for me writing music and performing is directly connected to that greater power. Whether we call it the voice within, or the divine spirit above, I enjoy creating and performing most when I feel most connected, and it's then when I seem to deliver my best quality.
